How wide should curtains be?

We wrote a new blog called How to Measure Curtains that contains more information on this topic.

To ensure that curtain panels look ample when closed, they should have a combined width that is 1.5 to 2.5 times the width of the window. That means if you are ordering grommet style or rod pocket style, the total drapery width should be at least doubled window width.

French pleated style panels have fullness built in, so if you are ordering French pleated heading style, you should order the panels that are the same width with your window. They will cover your window with a nice fullness.

Exceptions: If you’re hanging curtains just to frame a window and don’t intend to shut them, you can round down to 1.2 times the width.

I love the quality of the curtains and the overall look is beautiful! We bought ripple gold curtains. I thought they would be wrinkled from shipping, but when I got them up, not a wrinkle in sight! I would recommend LOFT curtains hands down and I’m already working on my next project with them! Customer service is also excellent, you get a person on the phone every time and we called several times with questions for mounting the ceiling track.

First, I'm no designer and I was very uncertain about what I needed. After receiving the samples I contacted a sales rep and he helped me through the decision process including reviewing photos that I sent and careful measurements. The results was a perfect fit for the room. I looked at other options for this window treatment (a total of 33 feet) and nothing came even close in price and the quality is top notch.
